Martta Tuomaala (b. 1983 in Lieto) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Helsinki. She focuses on various forms of film, video and installation. She gained a Master’s degree in Fine Art from Aalto University in 2014. She works as a script writer, director, producer and occasionally, also as a performer in her cinematic artworks.

Tuomaala’s artistic practice involves also elements of socially engaged art and militant research. Common themes in her artworks are workers’ everyday life, struggles of different individuals and communities, and abuse of power. Tuomaala has worked in different low-income fields for several years, and her own experiences have inspired her to create projects emphasizing workers’ rights issues.

Tuomaala participates actively in various art workers’ activities and events concerning art politics. She is also a board member in AV-Arkki (the Distribution Centre for Finnish Media Art), the Union of Finnish Art Associations and the Leftist Artists’ and Writers’ Association Kiila.
